Family Guy's Mike Henry Quits as Voice of Cleveland: 'Persons of Color Should Play Characters of Color'

One of Family Guy's most beloved characters will have a new voice.

Mike Henry, who has played the role of Cleveland Brown, is exiting the series after two decades.

“It’s been an honor to play Cleveland on Family Guy for 20 years,” Henry tweeted on Friday.

henry cleveland

“I love this character, but persons of color should play characters of color. Therefore, I will be stepping down from the role.”

Henry, who is not Black, has voiced Cleveland on Family Guy since 1999, when the series debuted.

He went on to star as the titular character on spinoff series The Cleveland show for four seasons between 2009-13.

After the show was canceled, he returned to Family Guy in a full-time capacity.

It's unclear whether Henry could be kept on the series in a whole new role, but we're sure an announcement will come down the line.

Family Guy typically produces episodes well in advance, so it's unclear whether the actor's voice has been used in future episodes, or if they will be scrapped.

Several other actors have announced this week that they will no longer be the voice of Black characters as Black Lives Matter protests continue across the country.

Episodes of 30 Rock and Scrubs that showed actors in blackface were pulled from streaming services and syndication.

Jenny Slate also announced that she will be parting ways with Big Mouth.

“At the start of the show, I reasoned with myself that it was permissible for me to play 'Missy' because her mom is Jewish and White — as am I,” Slate wrote on Instagram.

“But 'Missy' is also Black, and Black characters on an animated show should be played by Black people.”

The same week, Kristen Bell announced she would no longer be paying a mixed race character on Central Park.

"Casting a mixed race character with a white actress undermines the specificity of the mixed race and Black American experience," Bell said.

"It was wrong and we, on the Central Park team, are pledging to make it right. I am happy to relinquish this role to someone who can give a much more accurate portrayal and I will commit to learning, growing and doing my part for equality and inclusion."

Do the Recent Blackface and Voiceover Controversies Mean We Should Restrict Art?

$
0
0

As citizens nationwide have taken the streets to march for change over centuries-long racial disparities, a re-reckoning of racial disparities in television and film is occurring.

The path of least resistance for many who have a sincere desire to better racial equality is to cheer on this development without question, but that escapes the harder questions that a critical view of the situation can bring.

To refresh your memory, a number of voiceover actors these past two weeks have either voiced regret over playing non-white characters or agreed to step aside from non-white roles.

Blackface Collage

These include Alison Brie who voiced the half-Vietnamese Dianne Nguyen on BoJack Horseman; Jenny Slate who agreed to step down from voicing the half-black Missy on Big Mouth; and Mike Henry who agreed to step aside from the 20-year-old character of Cleveland on Family Guy.

Additionally, cancel culture has attempted to skewer actors and TV personalities such as Jimmy Kimmel and Jimmy Fallon.

In an extreme erasure of cultural artifacts that would ordinarily cause more vocal concern, episodes of Mr. Show, 30 Rock, and Scrubs have been banned from Netflix.

Let's start with the issue of blackface.

Jenny Slate

To have a debate over the degree that blackface is properly offensive to the black community and the degree with which that should dictate our actions isn't cut and dry.

Symbolism isn't inherently bad or good but based on cultural standards rather than absolutes.

Here's the thing: To agree that blackface is now wrong because of a cultural standard is to also acknowledge that such a cultural standard didn't exist as recently as five years ago.

From 2008 to approximately 2011, half-Venezuelan actor Fred Armisen played President Obama on Saturday Night Live and there was virtually no negative press about the incident. It was simply part of what was accepted as performance.

Robert Downey Jr

That same year, Robert Downey Jr. donned blackface in a satirical look at Oscar-bait performances in the film Tropic Thunder, and he similarly wasn't canceled. Instead, he was rewarded with an Oscar nomination.

To pretend that anyone was knowingly acting contrary to society's rules for any blackface performances that occurred over a decade ago is to be inconsistent in our judgment.

Megyn Kelly, who far fired from her show for questioning the current societal stance on blackface, made a salient point on Twitter that Robert Downey Jr. wore blackface and faced way more punishment than her for simply wanting to discuss it.

The creative voices behind 30 Rock, Mr. Show, and Scrubs have all been responsible and socially-conscious voices that have provided much-needed satire in their work when it was called for.

30 Rock Blackface

If they wish to apologize, that's their prerogative, but no one should expect them to disown their work.

As for the erasure of episodes, one has to wonder about the costs. HBO presented an equitable solution recently when it agreed to broadcast Gone with the Wind but with a four-minute intro added for context.

In the Reagan era and before then with the National Legion of Decency among other institutions, cultural wars of a different sort were waged from the conservative end of the spectrum, ironically.

Those cultural warriors wanted to prevent bad values from passing to the next generation's children.

Legion of Decency Tall

Though some might argue that preventing images with racist origins from being spread is nobler than characters who promote pre-marital sex or consumption of harmful substances.

Our cultural norms have changed for the better, perhaps, but that doesn't mean that the method of suppressing art is any worse of an idea.

As for the idea of saying certain forms of art are only acceptable when they're created by the color of the person who creates them, that places a lot of limits on great art.

The basis of this argument is that there are few opportunities for people of color as is.

Sean Penn Milk

If you look at the statistics, the Oscars, for example have nominated roughly the same percentage of black actors over the course of the 21st century as there are Black actors in America, and they are further diversifying their ranks every year.

Is it enough?

That's up for debate.

But the micro-scrutiny that dominates the press every year that the Academy Awards don't nominate enough people of color (to be expected if the voting body is truly granted free will to honor the best) is not necessarily accurate picture no matter how much this narrative dominates the headlines.

The Happy Couple - Schitt's Creek

At last year's Emmys, for examples five of the seven nominees for Best Comedy (Fleabag, Russian Doll, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, and The Good Place) had female protagonists, one had an ethnic minority (the Jewish community), and one had an LGBT lead (Schitt's Creek).

Looking back an additional two years, shows with people of color or LGBT as lead or creators that have been recognized with Best Comedy nominations or Emmys include Atlanta, Master of None, Transparent, Black-Ish, and Glow.

This is to say nothing of the recognition on the dramatic end for American Crime Story: Giovanni Versace, The Handmaid's Tale (a show about the oppression by the patriarchy),  the continued accolades for Orange Is the New Black, Viola Davis winning the Emmy for How to Get Away with Murder, and the Asian-American lead of Killing Eve.

This celebration extends far beyond rewards.

Intense Andrew- American Crime Story: Versace Season 1 Episode 8

A cursory glance at Rotten Tomatoes shows that the majority of TV critics (who often see boosting the work of marginalized groups as part of their job description) will give more of a chance to TV shows by minorities or LGBT voices than audiences will.

Master of None is ten points higher on Rotten Tomatoes with critics than audiences, Transparent is 12 points higher, Dear White People is 43 points higher, She's Gotta Have It is 12 points higher, and Awkwafina is Nora from Queens is 16 points higher

Diversity is a great thing and opponents of this shift in dogmatism like myself are largely overjoyed with shows featuring protagonists of different races or sexual orientations.

However, to overexaggerate the dearth in opportunities for people of color can present a bad course for our actions.

Unless there is a massive dearth in storytelling opportunities, a philosophy that only people of color should tell stories of people of color limits art. It discourages the kind of exploration into other people's cultures and walking in other people's footsteps that's the point of art in the first place.

After all, if you were white and only made stories about white people, would that be saying anything about some of the most pressing issues of the day?

Let us acknowledge the past in the context of the past and push for a future filled with dialogue about these racial disparities and opportunities for all in exploring them.

FOX Sets Premiere Dates for The Simpsons, Family Guy, and More!

The coronavirus pandemic will not result in delays for the shows that comprise FOX's animation domination slate of programming.

The network has announced that The Simpsons, Bless the Hearts, Bob's Burgers, and Family Guy will launch their latest seasons Sunday, September 27, right in line with when the shows typically debut.

Choose Me - The Simpsons

This is a good thing because it means there will be some semblance of normalcy for fans of these series.

Covid-19 has brought the TV world to a halt, and many shows will not be making the typical premiere week this year.

The rest of FOX's fall schedule will be filled with unscripted series, acquisitions, and two dramas that were set to launch during the 2019-20 season.

While networks such as ABC, CBS, and NBC are planning business as usual fall schedules, FOX is zeroing in on a pandemic-proof schedule given that it cannot guarantee its usual roster of shows will be ready with episodes banked.

LA's Finest Duo - Tall

Animation series have been the least affected when it comes to the pandemic, largely because these shows pivoted to remote settings.

TV production is slowly getting back underway with social distancing measures in place, so it's probably a good idea that FOX has banished the rest of its returning scripted slate to 2021.

If you need a refresher, here is the FOX fall schedule.

Family Guy & Bob's Burgers Get Multi-Year Renewals at FOX

The animation domination will not be ending at FOX in the near future.

The network has renewed Bob's Burgers for the 12th and 13th broadcast seasons of the Emmy Award-winning animated series, and renewed Family Guy for its 19th and 20th broadcast seasons, carrying both series through 2023.

“FAMILY GUY and BOB’S BURGERS are key pillars of our network’s success. By taking the genre to new heights and driving pop culture in meaningful ways, they’ve laid the foundation for making ANIMATION DOMINATION one of the most powerful program blocks in all of television,” said Michael Thorn, President, Entertainment, for FOX Entertainment.

“Both of these two-season renewals affirm once again our commitment to animation and empower us to continue in our build as the leader in the space with distinct and fresh new comedies."

"We’d like to thank Seth, Loren and their entire teams, not to mention our partners at 20th Television, and we’re excited to continue these great shows with them.”

famguyrenewed

This Sunday, Sept. 27 (9:00-9:30 PM ET/PT) on FOX, Bob's Burgers returns for an 11th season. The series follows BOB (H. Jon Benjamin) and his ever-quirky family who together run the restaurant Bob’s Burgers.

Including its 2020 Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Animated Program, the series has been nominated for the past seven consecutive years and won twice, in 2014 and 2017.

The series also was nominated for a Critics’ Choice Award and an Annie Award this year. Bento Box Entertainment serves as the animation studio on BOB’S BURGERS.

Entering its 18th season this Sunday (9:30-10:00 PM ET/PT), Family Guy premieres with its milestone 350th episode.

The series continues to entertain its die-hard fan base with razor-sharp humor, spot-on parodies, spectacular animation and orchestra-backed original music.

Since its debut in 1999, the series has reached cult status among fans, and its breakout star, a talking baby, has become one of the greatest TV characters of all time.

Family Guy has racked up numerous awards, including an Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Comedy Series, only the second animated series in television history to be honored with such a distinction.

Most recently, series creator and lead voice actor Seth MacFarlane (voices of Peter Griffin, Stewie Griffin, Brian Griffin and Quagmire) won the 2019 Emmy Award for Outstanding Character Voice-Over Performance.

Cast member Alex Borstein (voice of Lois Griffin) won the 2018 Emmy Award in the category.

MacFarlane also was nominated that year. He won the 2017 and 2016 Emmy Award in the category, and was nominated from 2013 to 2015.

Bob's Burgers is a 20th Television production. The series was created and is executive-produced by Loren Bouchard and Jim Dauterive. Nora Smith, Dan Fybel, Rich Rinaldi, Greg Thompson, and Jon Schroeder also serve as executive producers.

Bouchard and Smith are showrunners for the upcoming season.

Bento Box Entertainment produces the animation.

Family Guy Reveals New Cleveland Brown Actor Ahead of Season 19

Family Guy has lined up Mike Henry's replacement, three months after he announced he was stepping down as the voice of Cleveland Brown on the beloved animated series.

Arif Zahir will assume the role, but he will not be a part of the early episodes of Family Guy Season 19.

Because of how long in advance animated shows are produced, it will be some time before Zahir's episodes will be ready to air.

family guy cleveland brown

Henry, who is not Black, has played Cleveland, who is Black, Family Guy debuted.

He also toplined its spinoff, The Cleveland Show, for four seasons, and returned to Family Guy full-time when the series was canceled.

zahir

"Firstly, I’m eternally grateful to have received this once in a lifetime opportunity,” Zahir said in a statement.

“When I heard that Mike Henry was stepping down from the role of Cleveland Brown — my favorite cartoon character of all time — I was shocked and saddened, assuming we’d never see him again."

"When I learned I would get to take over the role? Overabundant gratitude. To Mike, you created something truly special and I promise I will do my absolute best to honor your legacy."

His statement continues, "To Rich Appel, Alec Sulkin and Seth MacFarlane, thank you for this incredible gift. And to the millions of fans who love this show, I promise not to let you down.”

mike henry

“I welcome Arif to the Family Guy team. Arif’s vocal talent is obvious, but his understanding of Cleveland and his respect for the character give me confidence that he is in the right hands," added Henry.

"I look forward to getting to know Arif and working with him to make sure Cleveland stays every bit as awesome as he has always been.”

Zahir is well-known for doing impressions of Cleveland on YouTube, so don't expect there to be any changes for the character.

Family Guy was renewed earlier this week for an additional two seasons, keeping the show on the air until 2023.

Despite softer ratings than recent years, it is still a force in delayed viewing.

25 Merry and Memorable Christmas Episodes For Your Enjoyment

$

Tis the season!

Snowy days, cozy blankets, days off, a fire crackling in the fire place, the smell of pine in the air...

Christmas has a feel to it that no other holiday does. It truly is the most wonderful time of the year!

In honor of this sacred holiday, I've gathered 25 of the most memorable Christmas episodes on TV. Some are funny and make you laugh; some are heartfelt and leave you comforted; and some are terrifying and make you glad you weren't there.

I've recommended 25 episodes so you can watch one every day leading up to Christmas. If anyone actually does this, please let me know because that would be awesome! Otherwise, feel free to skip around or just pick and choose.

One more thing, there are bound to be Christmas episodes you think are missing so definitely let me know in the comments.

Now, enjoy reliving the Christmas memories of your favorite TV friends and family!

1. Dec. 1st: "The Bracebridge Dinner" - Gilmore Girls

The bracebridge dinner gilmore girls
We begin with Gilmore Girls since I know most of you are going through withdrawals after binge watching season 8 in one day. On this episode, Lorelai and Sookie plan an elaborate meal only to lose their guests when they’re snowed in so they decide to invite the town instead. Throughout the beautifully decorated festivities, Rory pretends she’s not interested in Jess, Luke pretends he’s not interested in Lorelai, and Lorelai’s parents get a much needed mini-vacation. You can watch the full episode on Netflix.

2. Dec. 2nd: "Santa Simulation" - The Big Bang Theory

A girl for koothrappali
It was hard to pick just one Christmas episode from The Big Bang Theory but this is my favorite because it has a girls night out, Raj and Amy sharing hilarious horror stories of dealing with the opposite sex and a soft side of Sheldon. On this episode, the guys plan a Christmas themed Dungeons and Dragons game where Santa is kidnapped. When the girls learn they're not allowed to play they get dressed up to show the guys what they're missing and go out for drinks. Raj ends up tagging along which provides some of the funniest moments of the episode. During the game, we learn that Sheldon hates Christmas because he asked Santa to bring his Pop Pop back from the dead when he was 5 and all he got was lincoln logs. You can watch the full episode on CBS All Access.

3. Dec. 3rd: "The Strike" - Seinfeld

The strike seinfeld
A Festivus for the rest of us! Kramer wants to resurrect the forgotten holiday which George's dad invented as an alternative to the commercialism of Christmas. We also find out Kramer's been on strike for 12 years and finally goes back to work at a bagel shop only to go on strike again when they refuse to give him time off for Festivus. Elsewhere on the episode, Elaine is trying to track down a guy she gave a fake number to because she accidently wrote it on the back of her free sub card and George creates a fake charity so he doesn't have to give Christmas gifts to his co-workers. It's a classic Seinfeld episode and one of the best of its last season. You can watch the full episode on Hulu.

4. Dec. 4th: "A Very Sunny Christmas" - It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia

Very sunny christmas pic
Dennis and Dee are their usual whiny, entitled selves as they complain that Frank buys the presents they want and keeps them for himself. This year it’s a Lamborghini and a designer purse. Charlie and Mac reminisce about their childhoods which turn out to be horrific as Charlie discovers his mom was banging multiple “Santas” and Mac’s family was breaking into other people’s houses and stealing their presents. As usual the group is at their worst and it's awesome. Uplifting? No. Heartfelt? Not at all. The episode ends with them throwing rocks at trains because it’s really the only thing they have left to hold onto. You can watch the full episode on Hulu or Netflix.

5. Dec. 5th: "Christmas in the Car" - Bob's Burgers

Christmas in the car bobs burgers
This episode reminds me so much of 2001's Joy Ride. The Belchers head out on Christmas Eve to get a new tree after their first two die. While out, they cut off the driver of a candy cane truck who responds by chasing them. In their attempts to avoid him they end up spending Christmas Eve and the first few hours of Christmas in the car. Meanwhile, back at their house, Teddy stops by to turn off the oven and ends up stealing the episode. You can find current episodes of Bob's Burgers on Fox Now.

6. Dec. 6th: "The Best Chrismukkah Ever" - The OC

The best chrismukkah ever the oc
This episode will always be remembered for Summer's gift to Seth -- her in a Wonder Woman outfit. I mean, DAMN. The girl looked amazing. Anna was great but we all knew she didn’t stand a chance. Although Seth was forced to pick between the two girls, he will never have to choose between his mother’s waspy Christmas and his dad’s Jewish Hannukah because he created the best holiday ever – Chrismukkah. Eight days of presents followed by one day of many presents. The fact that it was Ryan’s first Christmas with the Cohens only made it that much more special. You can watch the full episode on Hulu.
