Family Guy Season 14 Episode 15 Review: A Lot Going on Upstairs

$

There certainly was a lot going on upstairs, and Brian was at the center of it all.

On Family Guy Season 14 Episode 15, Brian helped Stewie defeat his dream monster and helped Peter discover his new man cave.

And, as expected, things got a bit...silly.

Mind Meld - Family Guy Season 14 Episode 15

For some reason, Stewie's jumble of nightmares reminded me of a mishmash of Scooby Doo episodes, especially after Brian entered his dreams.

Going down the rollercoaster with monsters behind them, monsters shooting at them with laser guns, the two of them ending up in a football table game, and even the monster itself...all had a Scooby Doo vibe.

If they would have used the "Bristol Stomp" as background music for the monster chase, that would have sealed it. Yes, I know it wouldn't have made sense, but isn't that the point of nightmares?

Even the ending, after Brian killed it, was Scooby Doo-ish. The only difference was the monster just faded into it's real self instead of Brian pulling off a "mask."

Glenn Close (playing herself) made an appearance in Stewie's nightmares making a joke about boiled rabbit (even Stewie didn't get that joke which is what made it funny), and later saying "fart" to show Brian how silly she can be. It was a great bit, made better by the fact that Brian didn't have the proper time to react to her statement.

The best of Stewie's nightmares was him forgetting his opening song lines, bumbling through everything and eventually singing "pumpkin pie" instead of the usual.

Grandpa's kiss, the news, scary adults, things adults do or say to make normal things scary (like strangers), and petting zoos all made it into Stewie's nightmares. If you think about it, we probably are creating unnecessary nightmares for kids (and maybe even ourselves). A perfect example is the Ebola virus which Hartman had last in his news montage. Think about it.

The biggest fear, though, at least according to the dream Stewie, is the fear of disappointing someone you love. In Stewie's case, that would be Brian. It was sweet when Stewie said Brian was more of a father figure than the "fat man." They've certainly been through a lot together, and Brian was definitely humbled at the revelation.

But that was dream Stewie. Once back in the real world, Stewie basically rolls his eyes at Brian's story, even though we all know how much Brian really means to him.

While Stewie was battling his nightmares, Peter discovered the attic (thanks to both Brian and Stewie) and turned it into a man cave. Peter's story was kind of pointless. But, the silliness of what Peter and the guys did up there fit in with the silliness of the rest of the episode. Insulation fights (a guy's version of pillow fights??)...stupid.

I still can't get over Cleveland's "crowning" declaration. As stupid as the whole man cave bit was, that was stupid funny. I guess Lois got what she deserved by locking those bozos up there. Too bad for her dress.

Family Guy Season 14 Episode 16 Review: Heartbreak Dog

Sometimes people do stupid things when they feel sorry for themselves.

On Family Guy Season 14 Episode 16, Bonnie kisses Brian because he's there to comfort her at the right time, and Meg starts stealing old people's things when she gets treated poorly.

Neither were trying to be vindictive in their choices.

Even when Meg tries to do something good, nothing good comes out of it.

As part of her school's community service requirements, she has to volunteer at a nursing home. Not even five minutes into her shift, and she's already being insulted by Mrs. Parkers, who she's there to take care of and befriend.

Meg is understandably frustrated. It's not easy being nice when you're being told you stink like a boy. I know that sometimes older people can be mean, but Meg seems to always get the worst of the worst.

Still, Mrs. Parkers' bad behavior was no excuse for Meg to start taking things from the residents. Especially things she had no use for like brooches and hair brushes and urns of people's ashes.

But, this provided her with some sort of revenge in that she was dishing back the hurt by taking things that were important to other people.

When Chris finds out what she's been doing, he almost calls her out on it, but then sees a pair of glasses, and like father like son, completely forgets the seriousness of the issue and decides to join in on the "fun."  He even disguises himself as an angel from heaven in order to steal a bag of stuff.

Once again, Family Guy turns to the bodily function gag (this time an old lady farting because she thinks she's in heaven) to garner laughs, but it falls flat.

What's even worse is the cutaway that follows of a fat guy at a water park feeling sorry for himself and hanging with other fat people on the lazy river.  And, all of them are eating junk food as they laze down the river in inner tubes, because, you know, that's all fat people do. The whole gag is stupid.

Eventually, Meg and Chris realize what they've done is wrong and try to return everything, but they are caught. They don't get into trouble, which is a good thing, but Meg is forced to spend even more time with Mrs. Parkers, who still doesn't show her any appreciation. Meg's life is truly a living hell.

Had Mrs. Parkers simply said "thank you" at some point, I doubt any of this would have happened.

The same goes for Joe.

At 46, Bonnie's life is also a living hell, consisting of taking care of a baby and taking care of a crippled husband. But it wasn't always that way, as the videos Joe played at the party showed. It was interesting to watch how her facial expressions changed over the course of the marriage.

It can't be easy, and Bonnie had every right to have a moment of grief at her unrealized dreams. The only problem was that Brian overheard her crying and went to comfort her.

As it turns out, Bonnie just needed to vent, but in a moment of weakness (and maybe appreciation at being heard) she kisses Brian. Both realize the mistake and quickly fluff it off.

But, Brian later tells Peter about the kiss who eventually tells Joe during a game of charades the next day.  Instead of Joe trying to find out why his wife had to seek comfort from another man/dog, he starts taking out little acts of revenge on Brian, like putting doggie boots on him and recording him freaking out about it (okay, that was kind of funny.)

Lois is fed up and calls for a meeting, but instead of everyone working together to resolve and move past the issue, it becomes an attack fest against both Brian and Bonnie. Even after Bonnie explodes and expresses her frustrations, Joe does nothing.

Eventually Bonnie and Joe kiss and make up with Joe expressing his appreciation for his wife.

It's a happy ending for everyone on Family Guy, but is it really?

With the exception of the doggie boots gag, there was really nothing to laugh at in this episode. The lazy river cutaway, the Juliette Lewis references, and the old lady fart joke were all eye-rolling cheap gags. Overall, "Heartbreak Dog" felt more like a mini-drama than a humorous cartoon.

Family Guy Season 14 Episode 16 set out to prove just that when she got a job in a retirement community, but she got a little too greedy when she begun stealing from the elderly.

When Chris got caught up in it, he demanded a high cut of all of the takings, but did he secretly rat his sister out?

When it was all said and done, they both regretted everything they done because the punishment was the worst possible thing.

27 Most Precious Pets in TV History

$
0
0

From almost the beginning of the medium, television shows have featured beloved pets, many of whom stole the show.

Cats, dogs, birds, and even a dinosaur, all made the list. Some pets were on screen to provide comic relief while others were integral parts of the cast. And while certain animal companions adored their human costars, others had to be bribed and cajoled into showing affection.

What we found most surprising was how many of our favorites came straight out of animal shelters and ended up becoming stars!

Whether they were on for a season or the entire run of a series here are 27 pets on TV that we’ll never forget.

1. Marcel - Friends

Marcel friends
Marcel was Ross' pet Capuchin monkey on Friends Season 1. He first showed up as Ross' date for Monica's New Year’s Eve Party. Later, he ran off while Rachel was watching him, leading the the revelation that Marcel was an illegal exotic pet. Despite loving his little monkey, Marcel had to be sent to the San Diego Zoo when he reached sexual maturity and began humping every thing in sight. Turns out that in real life, Marcel was actually a female named Katie. Katie had several other Hollywood roles including 30 Rock, the movie Bruce Almighty and she's also been spotted with Ariana Grande and Kendall Jenner. Not bad for a monkey.

2. Tiger - The Brady Bunch

Tiger the brady bunch
The Brady Bunch started out with two pets but Carol's cat, Fluffy disappeared after the pilot. (We suspect foul play.) Tiger lasted a bit longer. The Bearded Collie was seen in a total of ten episodes but observant viewers will notice that Tiger was played by two different dogs. Tragically, the original Tiger was hit by a delivery vehicle during filming. The second Tiger turned out not to be as talented as the first and was simply fazed out with no explanation. Tiger, Tiger, Tiger. We miss you.

3. Elvis - Miami Vice

Elvis miami vice
Detective Sonny Crocket worked undercover, living on a boat in Miami as a drug dealer…and he had the most unusual pet: Elvis the alligator. As Crockett once explained, the alligator was a former mascot for Crockett's alma mater, the University of Florida Gators, and was forced to retire after biting a wide receiver from the University of Alabama. Crockett took him in as his “resident drug-sniffer and watch gator.” Elvis was actually played by two gators: Elvis and his stand-in, Presley.

4. Lassie - Lassie

Lassie lassie
Lassie is probably one of the most well known dogs in the world. The girl starred on her own series from 1954-1974 with several different scenarios in play over the years. She was, however, portrayed by a boy. The horror! Lassie saved many people and other animals from terrible situations and always knew how to get help, where to get help and how to find her way. And if you don't still use the phrase "Did Timmy fall in a well?" then maybe you're not human... Who knows if that was really a phrase on the show, but it sure could have been. And Lassie would have saved Timmy. Or Tommy before him.

5. Fred - I Love Lucy

Fred on i love lucy
Little Ricky brought home a puppy on I Love Lucy season 6. When Fred Mertz threatened to make them get rid of the dog as there were no pets allowed in the building, Little Ricky managed to change his mind by naming the adorable little dog, Fred. The cute Cairn Terrier was played by Danny who also played Fremont on Dennis the Menace. Actress Lucille Ball was a lifelong dog lover which is obvious when she's cuddling little Fred in scenes where he won't go to sleep.

6. Lucky the Cat - Alf

Lucky the cat alf
When alien Alf came to live with the Tanner family, things got a little complicated for their cat, Lucky because on Alf's home planet of Melmac, felines were considered a culinary delicacy. Thankfully, Alf refrained from eating the adorable kitty but Lucky did pass away in season 4. The Tanner family got a new cat and named it Lucky II.

Family Guy Season 14 Episode 17 Review: Take A Letter

$

So, Cleveland has a job.

While that wasn't the main focus of Family Guy Season 14 Episode 17, his bits were the most entertaining.

It's hard to believe that Cleveland's small part was better than Stewie's subplot.

It certainly was surprising to find Cleveland behind the desk when Lois went to mail her letter. I always thought his job was just to sit at the Clam and drink and gossip with the guys.

Lois was surprised to see him there too. He made a lot of stereotypical jabs at himself, which I thought were kind of funny.  But, he also served a greater purpose.

Lois needs a job because she wants to send Stewie to a private and pricey preschool, the post office is hiring, and Cleveland is the bridge. As expected, Lois gets the job.

Cleveland is tasked with showing her around. He talks a lot, most of it nonsensical, like when he's talking about the "real" dolls American men will be ordering soon and taking on car rides and other things.

But, then, he comes up with gems, like wanting to show Lois why you should never send cash in the mail. Or, delivering mail at night to in order to smell really nice dinners.

But, the best bit was later when Peter accuses Gretchen of "blackmail," and Cleveland shows up and gives him some mail.

It wasn't the most biting humor, but it was humorous. Can Cleveland's bits be construed as offensive? Absolutely, but then if you're easily offended, you shouldn't be watching this show, because this show has no problem spreading it around to everyone.

I also think that maybe all of Cleveland's appearances this entire episode was a stereotype. The black guy shows up to provide comic relief. Maybe I'm just reading too much into it. Either way, I found Cleveland very entertaining, and I am not Cleveland's biggest  fan.

When Mayor West brings Lois an undeliverable piece of mail, Cleveland shows her the dead letter bin and she decides she's going to organize it. Almost immediately she comes across a letter from Peter to another woman.

The story ends up turning into a Fatal Attraction lite when the other woman, Gretchen, decides to get Lois out of the way so she can have Peter all to herself, because she misinterprets the letter Peter wrote to her a thousand years ago.

There really wasn't anything that stood out in the plot that would be considered funny. The Peter Catcher bit was a very Peter type of thing, but it was very odd, too. Why is this show obsessed with child molesters?

At the end of all the drama Peter and Lois reaffirm their love for each other. Gretchen was never a threat at all. As if. Yawn.

The only entertaining part of Stewie's fancy preschool story with Chadley was the cutaway of the driver's license kid with the girls swooning over doing things in the car in relation to groceries and grocery shopping. And, that was funny only because Stewie showed up to ask us what we expected when his only frame of reference for things to do in a car is what he sees Lois do.

Maybe it wasn't laugh-out-loud funny, maybe it was just something a parent could appreciate, but it was cute, and I enjoyed it.

Another Stewie bit worth mentioning was when he and Brian were in the rich family's house talking about the owner posting a picture on Instagram. Brian said he'd eat the guy's dental floss, then Stewie could put it back on the roll.

It's incredibly gross, but if you've ever had a dog that's eaten ribbon and have had to pull it out of it's butt, you'd probably have thought this was funny. It's not, but it is, all at the same time.

Family Guy Season 14 Episode 18 Review: The New Adventures of Old Tom

$

Mindless entertainment indeed.

If only Family Guy Season 14 Episode 18 was as amusing as the movie it tried to parody. Not that Paul Blart: Mall Cop was that great a movie to begin with.

And, yes, there were some clever references to other movies (Silence of the Lamb was one) as well, but those still didn't help this installment move out of flatline mode. It's not that it was all horrible. It just felt like it was trying too hard.

When I first read the preview for this installment, it sounded like we were going to be following Peter around as he's trapped in the mall overnight. Imagine all the adventures he could have had with that free run. Imagine how fun that would have been.

Instead, what we got was the after effects of Peter riding the kid's train all night at high speed (along with a Speed reference and a Sandra Bullock slam) so that we could be introduced to Channel 5's newest correspondent, Dallas Portland, as he interviewed the misshapen "fat man."

There were bits before this turn that were actually funny, like Mort's new blowout hairstyle, the Price is Right bit at the very beginning, and the Silence of the Lamb cutaway.

I also really liked Peter getting a makeover at the cosmetic counter so Lois could say, "Wow," when she saw him. Because "wow" is about the only way you could describe Peter's made-up face. Though, you have to admit, he looked pretty good all made up.

But that's about it.

The rest of Peter's story went downhill once it turned into Tom Tucker versus Dallas Portland. Didn't Peter go down this road with Tom Tucker once before?

For some reason, Lois and the girls all going ga-ga over this "sweet new piece of ass" reminded me of some Family Guy episode from the past that I can't remember. Especially when they referenced getting high and drinking over at Bonnie's place.

Though, I will admit that Peter and Tom making the skating video was kind of cool. Until the bear interfered. And the ridiculous Billy Zane cutaways.

And Bonnie actually threw out some clever lines too, the best one being about never seeing a bulge in the front of a man's pants before. That was actually laugh-out-loud funny. Though probably offensive to many, I'm sure.

As expected, Peter saves Tucker's job, and everything is happy. Yawn.

Brian's adventure with Stewie was just as yawn inducing. Like Brian lying to a woman to impress her is anything new. Or him buying a $10,000 diamond ring to get her number, and then returning it is surprising.

But, Brian's plan to return the ring is foiled by Chris who ate the ring on a dare to himself. So, he and Stewie spend the rest of their story trying to figure out some way to get Chris to poop it out to return it in time.

This included going to a restaurant to stand in line for the poop-inducing meal (which had a very long line.)

Stewie tells us we know what restaurant they're talking about, but the restaurant I'm thinking about probably isn't the same one they're trying to slam. (Here in the Midwest if I say "they slide right in and slide right out" you'll know what I'm talking about.)

While bathroom humor isn't my favorite, I did find this part sort of amusing.

The rest of their story was just stupid. Especially the whole "all sex is rape" bit, and the end with Chris not being able to control his bowels in front of the girl. Just gross, even if it was off screen.

While it had it's funny bits, "The New Adventures of Old Tom" felt like it was all over the place. It started off with a bang, but ended with a fizzle.

Family Guy Season 14 Episode 19 Review: Run, Chris, Run

Skinny Jeans and sparkling water.

One Direction made a short, but sweet, appearance on Family Guy Season 14 Episode 19 when they joined Stewie and Simon Cowell in a spooky story campfire cutaway.

I guess if you're a huge fan, three seconds of an animated One Direction are enough to last you a lifetime, even if it was only Liam and Louis who talked.

Stewie was telling a horrific story about a band that checks into a hotel suite to find that the mini-bar wasn't stocked with sparkling water. The band gasped in fear, but when Stewie continued by telling them the stylist forgot to send the skinny jeans, the fear worsened.

Liam assured Louis it's just a story, until Stewie pulled out a pair of "regular" jeans which sent the band running and screaming into the woods.

Simon Cowell was there too, but Stewie scared him off with the threat of a story about a loose fitting t-shirt.

It was all kind of cheesy and goofy, but also kind of fun, especially when Stewie pulled out the regular jeans "that fit normal." As the mother of a teenage boy, I totally get the fear factor. This was a definite chuckle.

Aside from the cutaway, the rest of the episode revolved around Chris being named homecoming king, and Cleveland ditching Peter and the guys to hang out with Jerome.

Who would have ever thought that Chris would be named homecoming king? When he told Lois he was going to run, Lois was prepared for the worst. Much to her surprise, though, Chris actually won the nomination.

You knew it wasn't going to be something as simple as being liked by his peers, which made it surprising that Lois and the others (except Meg) kept feeding his ego about the win.

When Meg brought it up to Brian and Stewie, they were both a little stunned at the thought it could be a prank, which was kind of silly, because how could they think Chris being voted homecoming king was anything but a little odd? It just seemed out of character for the show's two brainiacs..

So, the two decided to do a little investigation of their own at the school which just gave Brian another opportunity to be creepy around underage girls. He got kicked out and made a reference to living in a "culture of fear." It wasn't funny, but I guess you could say it's timely.

They have security guards in the bathroom. We live in such a culture of fear now.

Brian

It's not until they're watching Tom Tucker's newscast about how Chris came to be king that they realized what Meg feared was partially true.

Chris wasn't voted king as a prank, it was more an act of pity for the weird kid. This led to a laugh-out-loud (at least for me) exchange between Brian and Stewie:

Stewie: Oh my God. They just elected him out of pity, because they think he's mentally challenged.
Brian: Kind of like we did with George W. Bush, huh? Right?
Stewie: [loud sigh] I guess. I guess, Brian. I don't...I don't know. Let's just watch some commercials now.

When Chris' ego didn't budge, Brian eventually told him the truth, but Chris didn't believe it until reality hit him in the face on stage. It's nice that Chris wasn't completely bummed out after realizing the truth, and I liked that Stewie was protective and kind to his brother. It was still out of character (for both of them actually), but a nice change.

The Herbert part was a bit odd, though, but then again....

I wasn't too thrilled with the whole Cleveland storyline, though I did enjoy when the guys stuck Cleveland with the bill, and Cleveland got upset about it, especially considering he never picks up a round.

But the rest of the story with Peter and the guys trying to get back into Cleveland's good graces was just stupid. If I could have, I would have just fast forwarded through those parts.

Like Jerome said, Cleveland is just boring.

Fox has uncorked its full 2016-2017 schedule... and there are plenty of surprises to be found.

For starters, much-hyped reboots/revivals 24: Legacy and Prison Break are being held back for mid-season.

That's got to sting a little for fans of Prison Break who were expecting the show to premiere at some point this year.

The good news for 24: Legacy is that it's getting the post Super Bowl slot, premiering in front of a giant audience after the Big Game on February 5.

For the most part, the fall schedule is very stable, with not much movement for existing shows.

Ominously missing from the fall schedule is Sleepy Hollow, which is expected to undergo a major revamp for Season 4 after the departure of lead, Nicole Beharie. It will return mid-season.

Family Guy Season 14 Episode 20 Review: Road to India

Wow. Family Guy. Just wow.

After watching Family Guy Season 14 Episode 20, one thing is for sure, Family Guy has pretty much become like that old aunt who just doesn't care anymore. You're repelled by her, but yet you can't stay away.

Trip to India - Family Guy

I really didn't think there would be an episode that could top Family Guy Season 14 Episode 10, but "Road to India" did. It was hilarious from beginning to end.

I had my doubts about Peter and Joe's bingo storyline. Joe is not necessarily the funniest guy (but he's miles and miles ahead of Cleveland), so when he's the focus of any storyline, things get a little shaky.

And the story was a little goofy. I think I would have preferred the whole episode focus on Stewie and Brian, but then Peter made it all worth while, not with his stupid Ensure joke:

Joe: You and the gang? I'm the one who brought you here.
Peter: Yeah, well, you know something? The Mayflower also brought fungus which then became the potato famine.
Joe: What the hell are you talking about?
Peter: I don't know. I had like about four Ensures. I'm outta my mind.

But with the thunderstorm fart meeting cutaway. I've said before that I'm not a big fan of bathroom humor, but this was too much. When that fart came and the thunder didn't, I thought I was going to die. Seriously, that was a ROFL moment.

There were plenty of ROFL moments during Stewie and Brian's story, too. And ones that I shouldn't have even considered funny. But it's Family Guy and being offensive goes hand in hand with laughs on this show.

The Shakespeare cutaway and the Jeb Bush cutaway were both incredibly offensive, but it was hard not to laugh. The idea of Jeb Bush being married to Consuela was so out there that made it even more hilarious. Cutaways are usually not my favorites with Family Guy, but this time, almost all of them were gold.

Brian becomes obsessed with Padma, the tech support woman he's been talking to about his computer issues. We all know Brian only thinks with one part of his body, but Stewie nailed it when he said:

Amazing. One second of a stranger's voice on a phone, and you've got full Bollywood.

Stewie

at The two head to India to meet Padma (though she isn't aware of it) and it pretty much becomes one offensive joke after another. And there are some doozy's. And yes, they were funny.

Probably the best moment was the after they got off the bus, and Brian expressed his desire for a nice, juicy steak. When the Indian guys get offended because cows are sacred in their country, Brian freaks out and yells for Stewie to do something.

So, Stewie does what any reasonable person would do when they are confronted by angry Indians: push the dots on their heads to shut them down. And down they went like disconnected robots.

I am ashamed to say I could not stop laughing at that scene. It was the most ridiculous thing ever, but it was funny as hell.  Who thinks of these things? And seriously, Brian is ready to take off, but Stewie wants to take a look at their wieners before they leave. Such a Stewie thing to do.

Brian's meeting of Padma doesn't turn out the way he thinks it's going to (does it ever?) She's engaged to be married, but when she professes her love for Brian, he has to give money to her father for the money he paid to the original groom to be.

Brian decides to go on the India version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire. It's hosted by Anil Kapoor, which is another clever joke in itself.

But on the very first question he loses, because he decides the answer has to be Jiminy Cricket. No matter how India Brian tried to make Jiminiy Cricket sound, he wasn't going to win.

As it turns out Padma wasn't really looking for love with Brian. He's blown off, but tries to make light of it, until Stewie calls him out on it:

Stewie: A peck on the cheek? Was that worth an $8000 coach ticket?
Brian: You know what? It's about the journey, not the destination.
Stewie: No, it's not. This sucked, and you failed.

It was a Bollywood closing, just like it's opening, and enjoyed the Bengal tiger trying to rip Brian to shreds, if only because of Stewie's questioning of Padma about Bengal tigers running free in the city. There's a lesson there.
